Many people have completely eliminated thier home phone line and use only cell phone service.  But for most the need for a home phone line is a must.  Wheater its for business, or for older members of the family that can't seem to remember your cell phone number, or just for ease of mind nowing 911 can be reached even without cell phone service.  This is understandable, but the amount paid to the utility company isn't.

Running a business requires us to have a land line, even though most of our business is done with cell phones.  We maintained a very minimal service plan and the cost didn't bother much.  Finding a less expensive plan was low on our list to do, but then we started having service issues.  Everytime it would rain or get windy we would lose service.  Usually it would come back in a day or two when things dried out but not always.  We would have to endure theservice tech and waste hours only to have them up on the pole again to check the connections.

Why was I paying for a phone service that was constiantly going out of service.

I did research for new phone service providers finding that I had the best price already and all would still be using the faulty lines to my house.  I checked VOIP (voice over internet protocal) providers.  You probably heard of Majic Jack.  I found that product like Majic Jack required your computer to be on to use the over the internet phone service and others that ran straight of your modum required monthly plans.  These cost just as much if not more than the utility company.

Then I found Ooma.  A VOIP service without montly plan cost.  This device, about the size of an answering machine, cost around $200 but had zero monly plan cost.  You just pay for FCC charges, around $4 a month.  All calls to the US are FREE.

We have a customer that has a two line phone plan for a home business and spends around $125 a month on phone service.  Using this as an example:
  • $125 a month x 12 = $1500 a year for current phone service provider
  • $0 a month x 12 = $0 a year for Ooma VOIP service
  • $200 a year for Ooma Premium Business service
  • $1,300 a year in Savings
  • First year savings of $1,010 after upfront cost of Ooma and number transfer cost.
