Lighting Choices to Save You Money

Starting in 2012 the U.S. Government law to ban certain light bulbs, signed into law by George W. Bush in 2007, will take affect.  Starting with the 100watt incandescent light bulb.  We will no longer have the 100watt light bulb made available to us.  Instead the 72watt light bulb will be the highest wattage screw in type incandescent light bulb available.  California has already put this plan into effect in 2011.

Once the existing supply of the 100watt bulb is depleted they will no longer be available.  Slowly over the next few years more and more incandescent screw in lamps will be eliminated until the highest wattage will be 40watts.  This is being done to encourage the use of CFL (compact flourescent lamps) and LED (Light Emitting Diode) lamps.

Installing lighting control devices like dimmers, timers, and occupancy detectors are great ways to lower your electric bill.

Dimmers like Meastro by Lutron allow you to dim lights to suit the current mood while supplying a preset level for general lighting.  Double tap the dimmer and the lighting level increases to full brightness.

Wall timers like those supplied by Leviton turn your exterior lights on and off at a preset time.  No more forgeting to turn off the lights in the morning and letting them run all day long wasting electricity and costing you money.

Use occupancy detectors in kitchens and baths to shut lights off when there's nobody in the room.  We've all left lights burning in the bathroom and kitchen while we're in the living room or have followed behind our kids or spouses turning off lights.  Eliminate the problem by installing an occupancy detector and stop wasting electricity and money.
